He left by train that same evening. Two days later, he arrived in the studio of a villa on the Griboedov Canal. Sitting in a Louis XIV bergère next to the fireplace, he was enveloped in the mixed scents of old leather-bound books, the crackling fire and the steam of black tea rising from a spectacular samovar.
