The Duke of Tuscany brought jasmine to India for the first time in 1690, a flower originating in Arabia. Fresh or dried, they still play a fundamental role in the myths, legends and daily rituals of India. Sometimes, jasminum sambac perfumes loose tea; in others, it is woven into floral necklaces. Spiritually revered, the smell of the flower is transformed into an offering in Hindu temples.
