Christelle Laprade:"In creating Scholar's Mate, I was inspired by the darkness of ebony wood, a clear reference to chessboards, and the method of Shou Sugi Ban, the ancient Japanese technique of preserving wood by burning it with fire.
I used smoky woods such as vetiver and cedar to bring this concept to life. Together, they give rise to a strong and resilient woody composition, enhanced by soft green notes of elemi and cardamom leaf, which add an element of curiosity."
